Cultivation

  •  Sugarbeet is cultivated commercially in the north-moderate zone between latitude 30° and 60°  North.
  • Therefore, it is considered a European crop, where, Europe alone produces around 52.4% of the total world production of sugarbeet.

1.      Dates:  Mid of August till Mid November in Egypt

2.      Shallow – 1-2 cm deep in clay soil (heavy soil)

and 2-3 cm in sand soil (light soil) and cover with fine soil.

3.      Row spacing:                       50 cm.

4.      Number of seeds/hill :         2-4 seeds

5.      Position of Seed beds :        upper   of hill

6.      Space between  each hill :  17-20 cm

7.      Rate - Polygerm   :              5-6 Kg seed /fad.

8.      Rate - Monogerm:               2-3 kg seed /fad.

Fad. = Faddan =  4200 m2 =  ~.42 ha.

Variety Composition

General Distinguished :

The sugarbeet varieties are distinguished as

·        High yielding

·        High sugar content

·        And a high yield and sugar yield

The high yielding varieties form roots of large weight, but with low sugar content.

The high yield and sugar content varieties have roots of medium weight.

Genetic Distinguished :

The varieties of sugarbeet can be divided in terms of the number of chromosomes

1-     diploid

2-     triploid derived from hybridization of tetraploid and diploid forms. Triploid hybrids have demonstrated higher productivity.

Thinning

1.      Monogerm, done mechanically, doesn't need thinning.

2.       Polygerm seed (manually).

  • Requires blocking - removing seedlings at intervals
  • Hand thinning of remaining clumps to l plant
  • Hand blocking/thinning - 20-40 hours/acre (fad.)

3.      Done completed by 4 leaf stage (30-50 day).

4.      During early planting , thinning is late till 2 month because of cotton leafworm .

5.       Final population: 25,000-35,000   plants/Fad..
